‘C.J. Thomas rose to great heights'
Special Correspondent (THE HINDU)
Thrissur: Writer Sukumar Azhikode has said that playwright C. J. Thomas rose to prophetic heights through his plays.
He was addressing a meeting organised by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi here on Wednesday July 14, 2010 in remembrance of Thomas.
“But the ‘prophet' became a propagandist when he wrote a play about the Liberation Struggle,” Prof. Azhikode commented.
He noted that Thomas might be considered by many as a failure in life, but he was a winner in art. “If the ultimate victory in life is not judged through a person's material achievements, Thomas is a victor.”
Prof. Azhikode observed that no other work in world literature had depicted King David's relationship with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite, as touchingly as Thomas' ‘ Aa Manushyan Nee Thanne' (Thou art the man) did.
Akademi chairman K. M. Raghavan Nambiar; scenarist John Paul; dramatist C. K. Thomas; actor Aliyar and writer N. R. Gramaprakash were present.
